In Loving Memory of our mum written by Mark Bamberger
Heather Mavis Bamberger was born in Westcliffe on Sea on the 12th May 1930 she and here baby brother Hugh (not so much of a baby now) had I believe a fairly idyllic life in leafy Surrey until the outbreak of war when at the time of the blitz with the threat of impending invasion she was evacuated several times ending up in a boarding school in Scotland for the majority of the war?
Post war she fell in love with a dashing RAF pilot with a very different background to her own (Bam had been a butchers boy and apprentice electrician before the war) They were married on the 4th September 1954 and over 50 years later still held each others hands everytime they walked down the street together.
Shortly after marrying dad was posted out to Aden flying helicopters so they moved out there but dad was promptly sent back to the UK for training so mum pregnant at the time was left on her own in a strange country. Perhaps this is where a lot of her stoicness came from?
Mum and dad had 4 wonderful children. Jonathan and Nick were born in Aden, Lucy in Plymouth whilst dad was in RAF intelligence and then myself – (depending on who you ask an accident or saving the best till last). Any subsequent success in life we have had is purely down to their love and nuturing. Later came 7 grandchildren and more recently 2 great children all of whom filled mum with great joy.
Besides raising a large family mum also worked as a carer for both physically and mentally handicapped children, did charity work through the church with the Vincent de Paul society and was a founder member of the UK part of Mother Theresa’s Missionary for charity. As a small boy I remember been in awe when Mother Theresa visiting our us on several occasions and dad went out to Northern Ireland with her.
She loved attending the Battle of Britain events which filled their later lives and choosing a new ridiculous hat to meeting the Royal Family became a favourite pastime. These events often ended in late night parties with lots of bawdy stories and glorious gossip.
Its impossible to sum up a long and eventful life in a few minutes and there are so many things we have not time to mention but the thing I remember most is that enduring love Heather and Bam had until dad passed away in 2008.
